Frequently Asked Questions
What are the fabrics that you use and where can I find them?
My favorite fabrics are 1930s reproduction prints and I occasionally use authentic 1930s fabrics, typically called feedsack or floursack. Some of my go-to repro designers for quilting cotton are Chloe’s Closet, Aunt Grace, and Denyse Schmidt. Sometimes you’ll find great fat quarter bundles on Etsy with prints by multiple designers. Local quilt shops can also be a terrific resource for these fabrics.
Do you sell finished items?
Unfortunately, at this time I do not sell finished items or custom orders as I can no longer sew for long periods. However, I may consider selling samples from time to time, which I would announce on social media in advance.
Can you send me a printed sewing pattern?
I cannot ship printed patterns to you, however there are lots of alternatives if you do not have a printer. You are welcome to ask a friend or relative to print it for you (and you may email it to them for this purpose). You can also upload the pattern to a ship and print store or office store website to have the pattern printed and mailed to you or ready for pickup. Libraries often have printers for public use as well.
Are your patterns suitable for beginners?
Yes! Most of my patterns are suitable for beginners. My product listings mention the recommended sewing level and list skills that would be helpful to have, but all my patterns are packed full of pictures and complete written instructions. I’m also happy to answer questions—if you get stuck while sewing up one of my patterns, please email me! My very easiest patterns are the elephant and doxie patterns. My owl and bunny patterns are easy too if you’re willing to try some simple appliqué.
Can I hand stitch your patterns?
Yes! I am not a hand-stitcher so I have not tried it myself and cannot offer advice, however I have been told by customers that they have had good luck hand sewing my patterns.
What kind of zippers do you use and where can I find them?
I love YKK nylon and metal donut pull zippers. I typically buy zippers that are the size I need and will tell you in my patterns which size is required for each project. My favorite source for zippers is Zipit on Etsy.
What kind of buttons do you use and where can I find them?
My buttons are mostly vintage and I don’t have a specific source for them. I’ve purchased buttons from Etsy, eBay, and local antique shops. If you are at an estate sale, always check for sewing baskets and if you ever see a cookie tin at a thrift shop or antique store, be sure to look inside!
How do I make binding look neat? How do I make binding the exact size I need?
Check out my binding video tutorial here! Tips: do not stretch the binding while you are clipping it to your project to measure, and make sure there are no loose bits, either. A little water-soluble glue to secure the binding on the tricky parts like corners works great, too. Also: Wonder Clips!
May I sell finished items made with your patterns?
Yes! Individual handmade stitchers may sell items made with my patterns. You must credit me for the pattern either on each product listing or on a visible tag or sign on or near your items at craft fairs. Please include the following information: This item was handmade using a Retro Mama sewing pattern. Thank you!
